Daniel, I don't know what are the changes between version vv9 and vv10
of compiz, but now things have improved considerably. Most notably, I
can't tell the difference with or without Twinview. I tested also with
several suspend/resume cycles and I saw no performance slowdowns.

Daniel, I resetted unity (--reset) and tried both your compiz and unity
packages (vv7 and vv5 respectively).
The combination of both solved my performance problems almost completely,
putting unity on par with gnome-shell.

Sorry, I performed some other tests and they proved I was wrong with
bailer.
Now it seems that the situation can be simply improved by deactivating
the FPS detection, and forcing the framerate to 120Hz. In this way the
performance is acceptable.
However, now I'm writing from gnome-shell, and it's
same problem here, deactivating bailer and forcing the framerate to 120Hz (my
monitor goes 60Hz) did the trick.
now i've got a smooth experience, even if gnome-shell (mutter) appears still
faster (mut it may be just an impression).
