hi. Check all the files in /etc/ld.so.conf.d and /etc/X11/Xsession.d . It you added a line that ruins everything..I think that this is the place to look for. Either that or make a vbox with ubuntu with a fresh install and replace these two directories with original ones ;). Good luck -- You

I don't really thing the problem is nvidia related. If I remove nvidia 3rd party drivers and go with nv driver the same thing happens. no gdm no lightdm , gdm is ok and startx is ok. It's like if when I do startx I don't have .xstartup fileI purged lightdm and gdm and installed again..still

Can someone close this. I've found it. It was related to /etc/ld.so.conf I had a usr/bin/env LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib32/nvidia-current/ in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90preserve_ld_library_path and that was the problem I removed the line I had added in the past and now it works. ** Description changed:
