Sorry to disappoint, but I just re-checked and indeed all test data I
submitted so far had set the "DRI=off" option (as can be seen from the Xorg
logs I posted). This stems from the very first tests I did, and in order
not to introduce to many variables, I left it at that setting. So I can
confirm
So it did, you are right. 'vesa' seems to be working when I use
'nomodeset'. I see slight screen corruption on window borders, but nothing
serious. At least it works now, thanks.

[i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on
Update: I backed out xorg-edgers from my machine. Non-edgers driver does
indeed work without KMS, and acpi=off seems to stop the freezes.
nomodeset has no apparent effect.
Summary:
-freezes with nomodeset
-does _not_ freeze with acpi=off
Problems with acpi=off:
-no sound
-no wifi
-no power manage
I've tried both kernels, and it does not seem to have any effect. The
machine starts, then X starts into low graphics mode and a window opens,
telling me that the Intel driver is complaining about no kernel
modesetting support. I have not made further experiments if I can get it

Geir, I am sorry to report that without ACPI support my laptop won't
initialize its hardware properly at all, resulting in a (non-functional)
low-graphics-fallback. So I cannot check for this.

Oh, forgot to mention: disabling Compiz does not work either (not
surprising since this does not seem to be related to 3D issues but
rather 2D acceleration).
