it seems that the backlight gets turned off. i can use the increase screen brightness button on the keyboard to turn the screen back on. similarly via sysfs: cd /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/ sudo chmod a+w brightness xrandr -s 1 ; grep -H . *brightness ; sleep 3 ; cat max_brightness

Public bug reported: when i type xrandr -s 1 the screen goes blank i can close the laptop lid and make it go to sleep and then open it again and everything is ok. the inteded resolution is applied and i can continue to work. this bug
