I saw in the releasenotes of 290.10 this and I was happy reading it:
- Fixed a regression that caused blank/white windows when exhausting
video memory on GeForce 6 and 7 series GPUs while using composited
desktops.

In my case, no desktop is rendered. Apps do start, but I don't see
anythin in the space between the launcher and the topbar but the dash.
Started apps don't show up.

I just got an answer from Nvidia, read below. Only I don't use compiz/unity now
because of the issue. I must send them an answer within 72 hours for the report
not to be closed...
On the 752445-bug (same as this one) it seems someone has allready tried the
280.13 driver Mike (from the mail below

I also have performance issues with intel 2.9 driver in karmic with my i855
IGP. I hope these can be solved!
These issues also include 2d video-performance.
