Sounds like we need a drm.debug=6 dmesg to understand what is going on
with the backlight during boot.

FYI, I noticed that if I use the Fn+F4 key on my laptop (which is the
'lower screen brightness' function key) and drop it to 0% (as reported
by a screen brightness overlay in KDE, if I'm logged in), my backlight
goes completely off, to the point that I cannot see anything on the
screen (similar to

I have a Lenovo 580, and on it too the screen goes black after the boot
screen. I press Fn + UpArrow to brighten it. I assume the screen
brightness is being set to zero every time I reboot.

I tried, and as with Ron A. in comment #5 to this bug, I, too can
'blindly' log in to my KDE desktop after entering my password. (So
basically, the screen goes completely off, then KDM comes up). After
logging in, the screen becomes active again.

System asks me for my password at boot ( it normal), then when I log in

I've had the same issue but upon waiting for kubuntu to load i wait once
it goes black enter my password and it goes into kubuntu with my screen

I just upgraded from Kubuntu 12.10 to 13.04, and have been struck by
this. Unless I attach my external monitor (via HDMI) during boot, my
laptop's LCD goes blank after showing the "Kubuntu" logo for a few
seconds. I know it's getting to the KDM login screen, since if I move my
mouse down+right, the

Diego Carrera Gallego,
Please run the tool sudo intel_reg_dumper once when the screen is working
correctly, and once with it showing the blank screen / out-of-range error, and
attach both files. Comparing the register settings for them may highlight
where the problem is.

I can see the resize triggered by adding the second screen, no errors
are reported though. Does the error persist after installation?
If so it would be good to rerun with drm.debug=6 appended to the kernel
commandline and attach the dmesg from boot (with the black screen) and
the output of intel_r
