The register dump confirms the logs in that no modeset was requested and
that the hardware is still driving the pipes as it was prior to the
black screen. As far as we can tell, the screen should still be lit up.
That suggests that something outside of the usual chain (and I suggest
-intel control

Please run the tool sudo intel_reg_dumper once when the screen is working
correctly, and once with it showing the blank screen / out-of-range error, and
attach both files. Comparing the register settings for them may highlight
where the problem is.

I am having this problem but with ubuntu 12.04.1 but only after install
the updates. Then start to get balck screens randomly before login.
Surprisingly, i have this issue with intel HD3000 and radeon but not
with FGLRX.

It has happened three or four times so far, but it did not happen in the
last 24 hours. However it usually happens suddenly during use and I
can't see neither the blinking cursor nor the mouse pointer.

There are no clues in the Xorg.0.log/dmesg. Can you be more precise
about when the black screens occur? After a period of inactivity, during
use, etc? When you get a black screen, is there anything still visible
(such as the cursor)?
