Same symptoms on Stylistic 4110. Framebuffer driver works, but slow.
Switching to TTY with ctrl-alt-f1 gives a very low resolution screen
with the cursor several lines off the bottom of the screen. Adding
vga=791 to the GRUB menu.conf gives a 1024x768 console screen which is
usable.

I have the same problem, but my laptop is a Dell Studio 1535, with Intel
GM965 graphics, and Intel 965 Express chipset. I have this problem in
ubuntu 8.04, 8.10, and the Ubuntu 9.10 beta 3
