I have upgraded to amd64 9.10.
The artifacts, which never really disappeared, are now more common and
somewhat noisome.
They occur after the mouse is passed from one screen to another.
Attached are the /var/log/Xorg.0.log and output of "sudo lspci -vvnn >
lspci.log"

Well the "artifacts" have ceased to become a problem. Several things
have happened.
1) I patched glib2.0 to resolve the 2nd monitor operational problems.

2) I discovered the obscure and onerous setting that was crashing compiz.
My comment on 2009-05-13 is incorrect.
The screen garbage appears after invoking "nautilus-open-terminal" on
screen 2 of 2.
This is repeatable.
Right clicking on screen 2 of 2 opens the context menu. Selecting "Open
in terminal" will open the terminal window.

Additional Information:
I use compiz, but only on screen 1 of 2 (:0.0) because with 9.04 compiz will
not composite scree 2 (:0.1) Compiz regularly stops compositing, and I
restart it with the command:
compiz --display :0.0 --only-current-sc
How large is your cursor? This looks like typical corruption that is
caused by a fundamental incompatibility between GLX and the X server's
software cursor code. If it's larger than 64x64, please try using a
