This morning I upgraded to the newest xorg-edgers packages again. Among those
upgrades was in particular an upgrade to
libgl1-mesa-dri_7.6.0+git20090902.dc9de806-0ubuntu0tormod.
This made the visual corruption shown in the video go away! Also the speed
regression in Extreme Tux Racer went

oops. forgot a step before the last one: it should have read:
upgraded libgl1-mesa-dri, thereby breaking blender again.
downgrade libdrm-intel1 to karmic
yes, blender is fine again but tux is now at only 1 to 2 FPS.
I think downgrading libdrm-intel1 alone might have broken the whole DRI
