I have had one user confirm that his i945 freezes continue under Lucid
(bug 475429) and two Karmic users with i945 confirm that downgrading
mesa to 7.5 helps. But that (or those) bug(s) is probably different from
the one you had.
And why do I
The freeze happens /at/ the kernel level. If mesa can cause this, it's
still a bug in the kernel driver for permitting it to get into that
state. :)

I don't think a kernel-level dri freeze can reasonably be considered a
mesa bug in any case.
I'm now running lucid on this laptop and have not seen this freeze with
the current 2.6.32 kernel; that also means I'm unlikely to invest any
time
We have had several reports of freezes (GPU hangs) on i945 chipsets
(945G, 945GM and 945GME, all of which uses the GMA950 graphics core)
in Karmic. I would like to get some testing going so that we may
identify the cause and give upstream all the information they need
(and possibly some they do
