to switch from compiz to metacity and viceversa, by terminal:
sudo metacity --replace
(to use metacity), this is just a temporarily switch that disable every special
effect and gives you the base desktop (without cube or others compiz plugins),
at the reboot your system will be

Well, so it is definitively a Xorg problem

Both compiz and metacity packages are installed. Where can I find out
whether they are enabled or not?
