I have an old IBM i1300-1171 Thinkpad with a Silicon Motion SM712 LynxEM+ video
controller with the same problem.
It appears that the video memory is overrunning and causing horizontal
displacement of some pixels after being upgraded to ubuntu 10.04.
I have tried the boot options of vga=normal an
