This is also a problem for the Khmer language (Cambodia) but Simos's suggestion fixed the problem: Specifically, 1. Type sudo gedit /etc/environment 2. Add a line GTK_IM_MODULE=xim 3. Save and restart your computer. And making sure the following exists in: sudo gedit
