adopter. Plus, I try to stick as much as possible to sort of mainstream
hardware. After eight years as a desktop Linux user, this was the first
problem I ever came across that someone had not already provided a
solution/workaround,
Pater Phil: Thank you so much! That solved my problem. Of course, as I
expected, Unity still doesn't work, but I have the same acceptable 3d
acceleration of Lucid (I can see glxgears and use compiz and 3d
applications like stellarium).
I didn't know anything about kernel mode-setting. I thought
The right place to file a bug against this problem seems to be the Linux
Kernel package.

I have the RS690M as well. I turned off kernel mode-setting and have
been unable to reproduce a freeze since.

I installed ubuntu-netbook too, and I couldn't try Unity. I got a blank
screen (just the background), nothing worked: no panels, no unity-
launcher (I had to restart gdm from tty1). However, one time (and just
one time) I could click on the upper-left side of the screen (where is
supposed to be
I upgraded from 10.04 (x64) to 10.10 and had 3D acceleration. Today I
re-installed 10.10 from scratch but 3D acceleration is no longer
working. I can still boot both the fresh and upgraded 10.10 (if that
would be useful).

Installed ubuntu-netbook 10.10.
Unity interface is broken, no menu and no icons, only panel backgrounds
Can press buttons and run software, sometimes palens flicker and I can see
icons.
When choosing options with screen blending such as applications search - can
