run unity --advanced-debug from a VT, it will do the right thing with
the export DISPLAY and all. just type 'run' once you see the gdb prompt.

I'd like to help by reporting logs. Please does someone know where logs
are saved after launching "ubuntu-bug unity" ?
Also, what commands to enter in order to "run compiz in gdb, and then
use 'bt full' to get a full backtrace" ?

The description of the bug (wallpaper displaying properly, popup notices
showing and hiding properly) indicates that X hasn't crashed or locked
up, and suggest a window manager (compiz) failure. So I'm reassigning
this to compiz for further analysis.
It would probably help if someone could gather

not to be an X or fglrx bug but rather something in nux:

I couldn't find release notes for the 10.12 catalyst driver online,
however afaik hd4xxx and hd5xxx *should* work with the current natty
setup, so this seems to be a legit bug.
However, note that in the next week or so we'll be uploading a new
xserver which will completely break everything for fgl
So far it is a no go for the radeon 5000 series, it seems; for radeon
and radeonhd drivers with unity. it's only early alpha though, so
things will get better as time goes on.
