I guess the problem is due to lack of dithering support in the driver -
unlike nv driver which has an option to enable dithering.
I looked into documentation of `geeqie`, since it was also exhibiting the
banding issue.
Per /usr/share/doc/geeqie/html/GuideOptionsHidden.html
dither_quality: Set
also in 16bpp:
`eog` (eye of gnome) displays gradients just fine
`geeqie`, `gliv` and `pqiv` all have color banding
very strange..

On a side note about exacerbation of the issue when DefaultDepth is set to 24:
Not only does gradient color banding occur for `lxdm` (which was okay in 16bit
depth), as `feh` and `gimp` (which were also okay in 16bit depth) exhibit the
banding issue as well. So, I believe that confirms that it
`nitrogen` exhibits the same gradient color banding issue in 16 bit
depth.
