Must admit, this appears to have stopped happening.
The functionality still doesn't work but it doesn't seem to
introduce a GPU hang any longer... it just doesn't output to the
external screen at all.
I'll close the bug unless I can reproduce it on a current system.

Hi Dave, it's good to hear you're able to reproduce this one reliably.
Please uninstall ia32-libs, reboot, and then attempt to reproduce this
bug (you can reinstall ia32-libs later). I want to rule it out as a
possible cause. ia32-libs includes 32-bit builds of various packages
and sometimes tho
