an external monitor. If I try to change the external monitor to
1900x1200, the system freezes and needs a power down to regain control.

Intel Sandybridge crash
Fixed in Mesa 7.12.

a bit stumped at it. the kwin backtrace was because DRI got ripped out
from under it when the GPU reset and disabled acceleration which mesa
couldn't cope with (that specific kwin segfault is fixed in mesa 7.12

Is this crash possible to replicate? If so can you please test the
latest development release (www.ubuntu.com/testing) and see if the issue
still occurs? If I remember rightly there have been a lot of fixes for
the Sandy Bridge GPU drivers committed upstream - the ones that shipped
with Natty weren
