Unattended... But isn't there an option for the textmode mass storage
drivers in the Driverpacks installer?
I never had any issues with simply using DP with Unattended. And we did

I'm having trouble with finding what to install and how... The one big
"pack" of updates I tried failed miserably (one slipstreaming method
gave heaps of missing files, another resulted in the p
I've only ever seen this happen when I've used DriverPacks, and only on
computers that used a specific sound chip. I beleive it was fixed in a
later DP version.

I found "DriverPacks" (driverpacks.net) to fix most of my issues
relating to drivers. They uses cab files with short names and unpack
them during the first GUI part of the install. Saved me a lot of
headaches relating to the limitations of Windows Setup.

I have just added a pile of drivers for some new laptops to the $OEM$\$1
dir, but they aren't being picked up by the resulting Windows install.
The existing ones had been working for our existing PCs, and I just
dropped more new drivers in. They copy across fine and I can manually
install them

It just uses the kernel and an initrd file on the USB stick, right?
Simply pull the stick out as soon as the kernel messages start spewing
onto the screen. USB drive should then be not present as drives start
detecting.
Cheesy workaround at best. At worst, well, it won't solve the problem.

I did this yesterday... I tried integrating the hotfix using the
/integrate:path option, but it wouldnt copy. Then I noticed that in one
dir it created (common files I think) there was an inf file and some
other files. Looked like a driver, so I copied it to the $oem$ dir where
I had other driv
