The Cherry Tree Music Co-op is closing its doors after 28 years of
presenting music in West Philadelphia. The Cherry Tree was founded in
1975 by a group of local musicians at a time when there were few
places for folk musicians to play in the Philadelphia area. Over the
years, the Co-op has hosted
Hassling? They were handing out citations (for $25 I think) if you were
caught riding on the sidewalk.
This is happening on the 36-37th block of walnut, by all the protected
stores that Penn values so much.
They need paths to go east on walnut for bikes.

I agree. As a biker I find it very dangerous when the bike lanes are used
as loading zones. Its not easy to have swerve around cars parked especially
where there are trolley tracks. One wrong turn and your wheel is stuck in
the trolley track and you're down. Also I don't understand why at the

I agree with John. And we both agree with what the law says.

This is one reason why I don't ride my bike much anymore. It's
_terrifying_ to imagine riding along, and some asshole in a car

Erm, no.

That is a ridiculous thing to say. It is dangerous on the street and Philly
drivers are maniacs. If people are courteous on their bikes on the sidewalk,
there is nothing wrong with sharing.

This is a moderately interesting discussion. As someone who does not own a
car and rides a bike for transportation, here are my thoughts:
A. If Penn is threatening to break locks and confiscate bikes (i.e. steal
them), this practice should be stopped. So long as bikes are not blocking
What kind of intelligent comment is that? What does that even mean?

I bike everyday. I agree with John that Bikes should stick to the street.
SideWALKS are for walking and not for biking. Bike lanes are for biking and
not for parking or driving in!!! That's the problem. Why have the bike
lanes if they're just going to be used as parking lanes. I don't

Ridiculous is making generalizations about drivers and any other 'group'

But John, let's keep the kids out of the streets; I work at Children's Hospital and see enough of the results of kids riding in the streets before they have the skills to do so.
David, who in their right mind would suggest that children bike in the streets?

We wear helmets. I prefer to ride in the street but find it impossible

Chestnut doesn't have a bike lane until you get down by Penn.In the morning rush hour it can get pretty hairy when folks park on the south side of the street between 38th and 46th, even if they aren't supposed to before 9:30. It seems like a perfectly reasonable solution to jump on a wide sidewalk
