The reason I ask is that producting a map based on severity of crime
(as Siano suggested) would be really nice. However, if you plotting
this by hand, it would be a PITA.

I think of this in terms of not being "suburbanified" rather than
"gentrified". I wonder how this compares to Center City. I'm guessing
if you look at a similar map of the Rittenhouse area you might actually
see more crimes
For detailed analysis of crime in Philadelphia, and in the UC area in
particular, I would recommend CrimeBase:

You can view trends, charts, summary statistics, etc. It takes a little
getting used to (not point & click) but you can find out lots of
