This is happening in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic-koala with lxmusic 0.4.0.
Apparently, this is the last version for this package, so I didn't tried
installing from sources.

I'm using Ubuntu Karmic Koala.
I have lxpanel 0.5.3 installed, and it is confirmed that the settings
page of the "desktop pager" are disabled. I can also confirm that you
can configure the number of virtual desktops using Menu >> Preferences
>> Openbox configuration menu.

Anyway, the desktop
I had the very same problem.
Actualy digging and digging and digging in a lot of forums, I found that
the error has to do with pcmanfm. The file manager is broken, and even
if your mime-types are updated, it will not recognise *any* file
(pcmanfm does also manage the desktop).
