I hear you on the lack of time! I don't remember which method you used
to 'open' your LS, but just by way of encouragement, a
Would you mind going into more detail about how you resolved the
dependencies to get everything working? I'm having a terrible time
trying to get all the slimserver dependencies set up on amd64, Dapper
Drake 6.06... I'm a novice also.
I seem to remember libyaml-syck-perl as the root of all my pro
My reasons for not setting up my linkstation for development is mostly

Go to a working computer with a CD burner,
go get the gparted-livecd

I'd be more concerned with the fact that the Linkstation (and Kuro Box)
are a bit lean in the CPU/RAM department, and even though I'm running
6.2.2 with MySQL on my Kuro, I could imagine 6.5 would begin to reach
the bounds of tolerability on the thing.
I'm hoping there's a Kuro 3 out by the tim

I'm totally unhappy right now - PartitionMagic v8 won't seem to work

Okay, that doesn't sound so ominous after all. In fact it seems
perfectly reasonable to me.

Just not providing compiled modules (which seems to be true for various
Linux distros on conventional PCs), or something else?
That's correct. We simply can't ship precompiled modules/binaries and keep
those up to date for every distro/hardware platform
Hmm, this does sound ominous. After reading the exchange in the bug
report my first reaction is: why not put development tools on your LS
so you can build the necessary modules? But presumably you have your
reasons not to.
I'd be happy to share compiled modules with you, but I'm not sure how

I've seen that, but the provisos that always accompany it make me way
too nervous.
So, IYO, am I better to change the filesystem (with files in place, as
I don't have room to easily back them up) using the Linux tool (what is

I would like to know which version of samba is included in the SlimCD
It's older than what's under "classical" on samba.org... 2.2.9

Help translate SlimServer by using the

Which reminds me, I've got a question while I'm here - right now the
music library is on a 200GB NTFS external hard drive. I want to be
able to read/write to this drive from both Ubuntu and XP - do I switch
to ext3?
FAT32 is the only format that can be written from both system. Just format
it
Hello,
I would like to know which version of samba is included in the SlimCD
?
Actually, I have configured a samba share under SlimCD that I can see
using my Windows 2000 computer, but accents are not shown correctly, I
have strange characters instead.
So it seems this is problem with the charse

You're absolutely right, I actually plan on making this box into a
headless server. I've tried SlimCD out, and liked it, although I was
totally lost when I tried to poke around, being such a noob. eg. I

Hi,
I just heard through one of my bug reports
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3420) that slimdevices was
not planning on supporting the linkstation anymore for the 6.5 branch.
Quote from Dan Sully: "Keep in mind that for 6.5, we will not be
supporting the LinkStation in any form. I
Let me ask you one question: what do you want to do with linux on your
PC ?
If you plan to install a linux distribution on a PC that will only be
used to act as the slimserver, you should try the slimCD and install
it. There is only a few files to configure ant it is quite easy !

I believe, IMHO, YMMV, and all that, that the most important reason to
select any distribution is that you have a buddy running it.
Having a friend that you can call when you get lost is priceless
Aaaagh, I'm going under! It's going to take me weeks to do enough
reading to understand what I'm into here.
So if I understand, the RPM is no good to me with the Ubuntu distro -
maybe I should switch to a Redhat distro for ease of use?(with
Slimserver, anyway) My CLI days are way behind me (hard t
