One suggestion is to download a 'live' cd. I know ubuntu has one, some
of the others do as well. This is a pared down distro that fits on one

OK, it turns out thar perl-devel was not installed (just something
called perl-devel-Cover and I didn't pay attention to note that this
was not perl-devel).
By installing perl-devel (from rpm.pbone.net) after automake, gdbm and
finally perl I could finally "service slimserver start".

I wasn't aware of this. I did set up Ubuntu + Automatix and played
with it
It seems no-one mentioned this yet, so:
There is a slimserver package in Ubuntu (Edgy) repositories, but it's a
little older. I suggest adding the slimdevices-repository to
/etc/apt/sources.list (if you didn't have it there already), that way
you will have the newest stable slimserver (6.5).
