Thanks for the replies and adivce. I plan on starting tomorrow (yes, living dangerously and loading a new box on Halloween. Asking for Gremlins. :-) ). I'm going to start with Freespire, then probably Ubuntu. Then go from there. I know a lot of installers now offer dual boot for Linux/Windows

OK, it turns out thar perl-devel was not installed (just something called perl-devel-Cover and I didn't pay attention to note that this was not perl-devel). By installing perl-devel (from rpm.pbone.net) after automake, gdbm and finally perl I could finally "service slimserver start". I hope this

Yes, testing is the 6.5.1 branch. According to this: http://debian.slimdevices.com/dists/testing/Release ...there was an update today, I imagine it gets updated every day as part of the nightly build. What I don't know is why you're not seeing the updates. Are you using something other than i386

It seems no-one mentioned this yet, so: There is a slimserver package in Ubuntu (Edgy) repositories, but it's a little older. I suggest adding the slimdevices-repository to /etc/apt/sources.list (if you didn't have it there already), that way you will have the newest stable slimserver (6.5).
