Apologies, Christian, it might just have slipped due to the many posts here. No offence. The "new way" you use seems to be the Good Thing: SC on Linux -should- be run in "UTF-8 mode", i.e. setting the system charset to (your local) UTF-8 variant (as you did) -plus- using UTF-8 filenames on Linux

Thanks for your reply. Somehow I have locked myself out. I can connect to my HG via Putty but can not connect via FTP to transfer the tarballs over to the box. I looked at hosts and hosts allow but do not see anything that would prevent this since I have the right IP address. -- daviseh ---
