What router do you have? Is its DHCP server working correctly? Have you watched the Pi start up on a monitor ? What does it say when it tries to start networking? If it says cable unplugged or similar its hardware but not necessarily the Pi. If it can't get an IP address it should tell you that.

I'd just like to chime in and say thanks to those that made and contributed to this thread. The instructions worked pretty much flawlessly; the only thing I had to do differently was to change the perl 5.20.2 references to 5.20.3.
