it was it was taking a
ridiculous amount of time to get onto the network on boot, which I
guessed meant the cable wasn't performing; I didn't bring that problem
up because it was simple to fix by switching to wifi temporarily).

LMS is running on a laptop about 15 feet away, files on an external HD.
Laptop is connected to router via ethernet.

onestly, 24/96 has always seemed like overkill to me, I'm just too
lazy to open them up in Audacity and downsample them when they come to
me that thick.)
