I have 7.4.2 and 7.5 running just fine on Ubuntu Jaunty...haven't
updated to Karmic yet due to the mysql issue but my understanding that
should be fixed with any of the nightlies (i.e. will only still be a
problem with stable (7.4.1)).

Sorry I can't help with this problem, although I can say it's certainly
not affecting all Ubuntu installs as both of mine are working fine. You
could try a 7.5 build? That's working fine for me at the moment on

I haven't updated my prod server to 7.4.0 release yet, but when I
updated to SBS in the nightlies a while ago it didn't migrate settings
(which was a pain). Was hoping that was fixed for release.

The only thing I can see different between your setup and mine (which
works fine) is the fact that you have spaces in the symlink names &
targets. Just as a test, you could try removing the spaces and seeing if
that makes any difference.

What process was taking 50% cpu? It's probably easier to fix the ubuntu
install than repackage SC for Puppy (at least IMHO). A server install of
ubuntu is extremely lightweight and should run fine on your setup.

What exactly are you trying to play? e.g. a single track, an album, a
large playlist, all songs? Do you have shuffle switched on? Is it the
same between pressing play on the web interface and the TP remote?
You should also consider upgrading SC, 7.3.2 is the current release.

Why are you bitrate limiting? If the source files are mp3 the slimp3
should play without transcoding. You'd save a ton of CPU and some
memo
Why do you need to connect to the internet? If you're playing local
content no external connection is needed.

I use cron-apt which runs nightly to do updates (on Ubuntu). I have it
set to download patches and send me an email with the details, I then
log in manually and trigger the actual update. I consider it safer that
way, although you can set it to full auto if you want.

MAC is the only guaranteed unique id for a player, as the CLI is
intended for computer rather than human consumption, readability isn't
an issue. There are CLI commands to list the known players, you can use
that in a script to map "friendly" name to MA

I think if you use the unstable repo you get the nightlies. During the
Boom testing while that branch was secret there wasn't a repo for it,
so I wrote a script which parsed the nightly directory, grabbed the
.deb and then installed it with dpkg (using "sudo dpkg -i $D
Debian/Ubuntu would be:

Just to throw my 2c into the pot, I'm running an Ubuntu 8.4 headless
server and SC7.2 installed perfectly via apt-get, except for the
apparmour issue which is fairly easy to work around. Default perl,
mysql, etc.

I'd be curious what you did to fix it, I am in a situation where every
time I reinstall a new version of SC I have to reboot the machine to
get it working. After that it's fine, but would like to avoid the
reboot.

Quick question. I'm in the process of moving my server from XP to linux,
is there any reason I can't just copy over the config file (assuming the
same SC version and I correct the paths)? Any weirdness with line
endings or anything?
I'm not aware of any MPD support within SqueezeCenter (looks like MPD
uses it's own protocol rather than something like http streaming which
could be proxied through SC). The players themselves certainly can't
connect to MP
Do you see your player in the SC web interface? What version of firmware
do you have on the controller? (Home/Settings/Advanced/About). And what
color is the little wifi icon at the bottom of the screen?

What type of files are you playing and how is your transcoding setup? If
you're playing files which are supported for native playback there
shouldn't be much that the server can do to mess up the sound :)
Try using real (i.e. Sun) Java, and I'd also recommend a stable release
like 1.6 rather than 1.7.

If you're using an AP then the SBC only communicates with the SC
instance. Ports 9000 and 3483 (tcp & udp) are the standards for all SC
