Paul, I noticed that NTFS is much slower on quite a few linux distro's, And it us noticeable though Samba. You can compare CPU usage in a 'top' during transfers I also noted my NTFS USB key to be relative slow on the pi3 I use as main music server. I would suggest to use ext2-3-4 on older pi

Then Install LMS. If you move the data and cache to your attached drive, you will not risk data loss if your sd-card corrupts. Please But am I right assuming that with LMS enabled, there's no longer the freedom to just pull the plugin without any risk of data loss? -- Michael
