Yeah, none of the listed JSF validators will be executed if the input
component has an empty (or null) value.
The only easy way to do this is with the required attribute on the
input component.

I am using Shale 20060911 release, which of course is different. But I
have seen this error before and it has always meant that a tiles
definition has an extends pointing to another tile def that doesn't
exist.
Perhaps your earlier jars let you get away with an error in tiles.xml
and your later
