JAVA_HOME and Jpackage

Over on the Jpackage list the view is that JAVA_HOME is obsolete as an environment variable. What's the rationale, please, for Cocoon to use JAVA_HOME? Also, for Jpackage+Cocoon users, you set this variable manually? thanks, Thufir -
