I am editing a text document and it is displaying it as three tiny pages
instead of a single page or part thereof to edit. My understanding is I have
to 'unhide' my status bar so I can click some sort of icon that will put me
back in text edit mode showing only the part of the page I am working
I would suggest you study an application that uses a main and sub form.

existing one and substitute in odd characters here or there?

I did also have the problem of horizontal lines not working. However, they do
appear correctly now under LO 4.1.2.3. My system is Linux-Mint-15, 32 bit.
But then - as I have mentioned before (and filed a bug report) - time-values
don't appear correctly both in Base as such and of course
