(Strangely, there’s an option within the style definition of “Don’t add
space between paragraphs of the same style.” Why there should be an
option of *not* doing something so unorthodox is another mystery;
however, it also has no effect.)

In the paragraph formatting tab for your paragraph styles, check to see
if you have any "Spacing" either under "Above paragraph" or "Below
paragraph." From what you have described, I would think you would want
both of those set to "0".
