I didn't know Nagios yet. I understand hyperic is some of autodiscovery of
majority of the services on a machine. Nagios looks more complexe, isn't it
?
Do you have any nagios plus ins for kannel ?

I think we can fetch the Kannel Admin URL into Nagios configuration, so it can
be monitored. CMIIW ;)

believe it can be easily enough extended to monitor specific connections
and other details

You need to compile kannel with support for mysq. ie in configure add
--with-mysql option among the others you might need.
Also you need to have mysq libraries installed (devel/common
depending on your OS)

messages stats (Sent/Received/Failed Queued).

i am using REDHAT Linux 5 , Intel Pentium 4 processor.
Actually most of GSM Modems are usable with Kannel, as long as it is
detectable by your OS and support standard AT.
