This is regarding OOo v. 1.1.4 on a Linux box.
When I go to Tools -> AutoCorrect/AutoFormat and try to add special characters
into the With field under Replace, the font used to display the special
characters is an X11 bitmap font -- New Century Schoolbook -- as opposed to an
antialiased TTF/Type1
I'm not very good at these things, but at the risk of blasphemy, I got
my Avery labels to work by downloading the templates for Word from the
Avery website and then opening them in OOo and saving them in OOo format
for further use and modification.

Is it that your quickstart bar hides the icon's... you may have to
click the "<<" to see the icon.
Alternatively it could be that for some reason OOo is completely
exiting when you close a document - if this is the case, then reply to
the list.
