I like your idea on both scribus and
since we are talking about a MS and scribus equivalent, would it be

You don't mention it, but Scribus is now available for Windows too. I haven't
personally used the Windows version so I can't vouch for how stable it is, or
isn't.
It is great!

as far as i know it is OK. i use OO and GIMP on my thumb drive at school all
the time. i am fairly close to the guy who is head of the tech area in my
department at the university and we have had discussions about installing OO
on the computers in his domain. however, because of some contract
boss isn't looking who are you talking about?

I am presently going to Illinois State University and I tried to get OO
approved for all the computers. However they could not because of some
contract they have with MS. ( I am working to get them to break this
contract- which I feel is an illegal contract- but I have not be to do this
yet).
This really works well; I have been using my thumb drive for awhile to bring
portable software (OO) around with me at school. There are other programs
that you can also put on your drive, like Scribus and GIMP. These have
gotten me out of many jams when I needed to write a paper or edit an image,
OpenOffice will not only read word and excel documents, but also write to
them. They would probably want to use the native format to OO, but if needs
be they can use the other formats.
