An English OOo 2.0.4 on Mac OS X 10.3.9 here.
Top right in the Styles & Formatting there is the option of creating a new
style based on the current formatting, with a little arrow opening a popup
with New Style from Selection/Update Style/Load Styles as options.

It's not exactly the same but you can load styles explicitly from a
