Currently have an older version of Open Office 3.3 installed and have tried to
install the latest version. After going thru all the preliminaries and
starting the download to my computer ( Windows XP), I get a message that the
older version cannot be removed and to contact OO tech support.

in the market. It's also significant that other companies support Open
Source, such as IBM and HP.

IMHO, in some cases OOo is better than 2007, and in some places it may
not be. Download it from www.openoffice.org and take it for a spin...
Being open source, you won't have to pay for it, nor endure any of
those time limited demo's...
