My daughter is studying at the University College of London and she uses Open
Office on her computer.
She needs to send me files by email to me in South Africa in Word format so
that I can open them on my computer. I cannot open .odt files.

Your daughter should save their files in MS Word format (I suppose you
use MS Word). Tell her to use Save As MS Word or Save As RTF if she
wants to send you the file. - The other solution would be that you
download OpenOffice yourself (you can have it for free at
http://www.openoffice.org/).

I think Dan gave you the best answer. Your daughter should use the
option to send the document as MS-Word attachment (FileSendSend as
Microsoft Word). This way she doesn't have to store unneeded copies of
all the documents she sends to you.
Alternatively you could install OpenOffice
