If you use additional software on your android
like aCal (see http://f-droid.org/) you don't
need funambol. But I've too less experience with
aCal to say fine or fail to this solution.

to complete all the other answers (and correct me if I’m wrong), the web
interface is mainly inspired from Thunderbird but it’s only a design and
functional choice. It’s not running any Thunderbird’s code. You can/should read
more about it on their website :
