Sorry, it's not the --enable-hardquota=5M param that wrong.
to use valias feature you need to use mysql:
--enable-valias=y --enable-mysql=y
Hope that fixes it.

if you do a ./configure --help
..
--enable-hardquota=#|n n disables quotas, or # where # is a number in bytes NOT y,
do not use Y, y is BAD
...
so you need --enable-hardquota=500
