So per Courier's instructions I am posting my questions to this list.
I am on OpenBSD 3.2, with qmail, vpopmail 5.2.1, and courier 2.2.1. my
vpopmail works like a dream and I don't have any problems. But I
decided to add some IMAP connectivity for various reasons. I installed
the latest Courier
AS far as I have ever understood, the problem with relaxing the
permissions on this directory is that libvpopmail.a contains sensitive
information hardcoded into the library. Things like the mysql
password. After you have compiled you should tighten the perms back up.

Perhaps I missed something in the documentation, but in my install I am
having "bounced bounce" messages returning to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] So if I have a machine called mail.bob.com
and I host a dozen or so domains, all the "bounced bounce" messages are
coming to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Wait let me follow up on this, that I CAN create other vdomains and
users in those domains. However I can't seem to do anything with my
default domain of whootis.com.
