Yes, if you do remote NDMP backups to a media server storage unit then
that storage unit will take multiplex streams as normal. Performance is
not spectacular, though. I only use this method in some of our larger
remote offices that have small filers (<2TB) and only 2-4 tape drives to
backup the lo

Hello
Back in February, I created an adhoc manual backup of a server which had the
retnetion period set to infinity.
Today, I went to try and restore the data and found that I could not see any
backups to restore either on the client itself or using the server.
I can search the media ID and
Question,
Normally when you dedicate a drive(s) to a NDMP host that host can only
use one tape drive per host and cannot multiplex data streams. If you
chose not to dedicate any tape drives to the NDMP host and chose to use
the remote NDMP backup method, can a single host use multiple tape

This is a situation where a VTL would be quite useful.
You could create some virtual drives that are assigned as NDMP drives and
dedicated to a filer, and also have a suitable number of non-NDMP drives
assigned to master or media servers.
The VTL would then clone tapes from both behind the scenes

Yes - with 6.x, IIRC, you can share a drive between NDMP and non-NDMP. I
think it started with 6.0, but I'm not sure. It's there in 6.5 for certain.

See...that's the thing. Symantec is not straight forward with the
proper Master Server hardware recommendations. It's side stepped
answers and vague responses. I guess the fact is, they don't really
know what to recommend with your Netbackup domain reaches a certain

Is this definitely correct? I was under the impression that it would

Is it possible to create a storage unit only for these two backups, have
the maximum concurrent jobs set to one and then fire them in order? (or
use priority as Jeff suggested below.) That will work if you don't have
storage unit requirements.

If you want the second policy to run only after the first, then create a USER
schedule in the second policy, create a bpend_notify.firstpolicy script/bat/cmd
file and have it call the second policy. Of course if what your looking for is
maximum tape usage this will accomplish the exact opposite.
The only way I could see to do this would be to use an external
scheduling tool like Tivoli Workload Scheduler (Maestro).
I don't see how this would "maximize the tape useage" however. It seems
it would be a bit inefficient overall as you'd be arbitrarily preventing
a job from kicking off when it

Hi all,
In order to maximise the tape useage, I want to be able to have it so no matter
what time Policy 1 finishes, Policy 2 will not start until Policy 1 is
completed.
Is there a way to put a dependency on policies under 6.0 MP4?
Cheers.

So you believe the Netbackup software itself was the performance
limitation in your environment?
Otherwise, I assume you made some significant hardware or process
changes as part of your upgrade.
