Problem was there was a VXVM5.0_UPGRADE (or similar) marker file in /
(root)

I ran into this recently too. From the support guys I got:
If vxconfigd isn't starting on boot up, check the following:
cd /etc/vx/reconfig.d/state.d

This was a fresh install of 5.0 with Mp1 applies on top, and MP1_R5 on top of
that.
I run vxinstall, it starts up just fine, but doesn't start up on reboot.
Where do I look.
