I use the 'Plain Jane foam ear plugs for bass / bream bugs already. They are more durable than you might think. AND, the foam material is soft enough that the fish never really feels the bug until he's been hooked. The bite to catch ratio is higher for the ear plug fly / bug VS the regular

Bass aren't at all leader shy. If you find yourself in that situation again, consider cutting back your tapered leader to a diameter that would allow you to land that big bass. Would cost you the price of a leader, which is less than the cost of a missed opportunity. jack Austin Anthony
