At first blush, was thinking that Xacti HD cameras that record to SD memory cards would prove an interesting solution. Mailing you the SD cards shouldn't be too much of a problem. Very small. Perhaps TOO small? Problem with all of this - regardless of what camera you choose - will be getting good

The xacti cameras vary in their ability to shoot in low-light but generally speaking they are not ideal for this. You can get good results by changing white balance and iso but it sounds like you need something that can more consistently handle low-light well so a larger quality lens should be

The flip does fit the bill. Exactly the features I was decribing. Little/ no zoom, simple features, LCD playback, uses AA batteries. It doesn't have much memory, but then 30 minutes for the intro model is probably fine for a kid. I'm suprised it's so expensive though. But then I haven't used one
