There used to be several tools for evaluating public domain and other legal
situations with respect to specific media items at http://librarycopyright.net/
But today I find that site (and other sites which purport to have these tools)
are marked with red warning signs that they are dangerous

I was pretty sure that this was the site maintained by the Copyright Advisory
Network (CAN), so did a Google search on that name. The search results confirm
that this domain name is CAN, and the short blurb under the link in the hit
list
Thanks. It looks like maybe it was hacked, then, and became not-secure, based
on the wording.
I hope it will be back soon.

As Cindy found, the site has been taken down for repair. Most browsers
automatically block reported threat sites, but you can usually configure
them to just warn you rather than outright block access - at your own
risk.

As one chorus of my swansong, and as part of Berkeley's ongoing
partnership with the Pacifica Radio Archives, I'm shepherding a really
cool collection of historical (1950s-70s) audio recordings concerning
women and the women's movement into digital life. The first 26 recordings

MOST decidedly VERY cool!

Cindy is exactly right. The CAN site was compromised - big time. We hired an
outside contractor to help us clean it up because ALA staff would not do it (it
is a big and tricky job with many steps).
Our contractor tells me that the site will be back up and running before Annual
conference.
There was a virus issue on their server. They finally have someone hired to
clean and host the files more securely. Everything should be back up in a week.
A new copyright terms tool will also be released around ala annual so keep an
eye out for that!
