Thanks everyone for your help. All suggestions were good. I never knew
about the column command. I ended up using Ben's suggestion. I already
used expandtab, but I didn't know about retab. That's helpful.

I have defined an abbreviation as:

This works fine when I type ib but doesn't work when ib
is preceded by a parenthesis or any other character. How can I create
an abbreviation that will work regardless of what precedes it?
