I have some old floppies that I find and they are not in the best shape. I have had this happen at least twice, so I am writing here to get some advice. When I try to test out these floppies, sometimes I put one in my IIci that starts making a high pitched squealing noise as it spins the disk and

Touching the heads, even lightly, is never a good idea. The heads are pre-aligned by bent pieces of metal, unlike the old 5.25" drives which had springs. This means that touching them moves them out of a rather narrow working range. Bringing them back into alignment requires an oscilloscope a

Don't bother. The drive will have to be replaced. I know because I did the same exact thing you did. Drive was working, I wiped the heads so lightly it wouldn't hurt the most delicate flower. Stopped working promptly afterwards. The same amount of pressure you need to clean the heads is the s

Did you disassemble the drive? In my case it already wasn't working, so I don't know if it was wrecked by the disk before trying to clean it. Maybe excessive friction ruined the alignment? Is there any way to fix it? I don't want to junk it =( On Fri, Apr 4, 2014 at 7:13 PM, Jordan Utolia wrot

Just an update, I tried a floppy again and it was able to show the contents in the disk, but it was giving me errors when I tried opening stuff. I don't know if that makes any difference in the diagnosis. On Fri, Apr 4, 2014 at 8:36 PM, TT wrote: > Did you disassemble the drive? > > In my case

For curiosity's sake, do you know what this "arcane knowledge" is? I'm assuming if you had two identical drives (one that worked and one that didn't) you could just record the output (with your oscilloscope) of reading a good disk on the working drive and then hook the oscilloscope up to the ot
